Dear Trail Rider,
A horseback pack trip into the heart of the Gila is a genuine wilderness experience.
America's largest and the world's first wilderness area…the mountains of the Gila is rich with human history and blessed with the most diverse landscape and wildlife anywhere on the planet.
Ancient Indians dating back 1000 years lived in this region, leaving behind cliff dwellings and other ruins. The Apaches called the Gila home, with the birthplace of Geronimo located within the Gila.
A host of colorful explorers, hunters, prospectors and homesteaders tried in vain to settle the Gila. With over 3 million acres to explore, the Gila Wilderness provides nearly "endless" riding country. Some of the most unusual geology anywhere lies along the scenic creek bottoms…spectacular hoodoo's and caves.
The vistas are breathtaking…as far as the eye can see -- complete wilderness. Along the way, take in remarkable old growth Ponderosas, Douglas Firs and the majestic Aspens.
The Gila provides a remarkable wildlife habitat --observe elk, deer, bear, turkeys, bobcats, rare birds, plus the newly introduced Mexican Gray Wolf!
Experienced and gentle riding animals, tasteful home-cooked food and an enjoyable and fun staff all add to the uniqueness of the Gila Wilderness horseback vacation. We love our work!
U-Trail is located in Glenwood on the western edge of the Gila Wilderness in southwest New Mexico. Join the U-Trail crew for a journey of a lifetime…a true horseback wilderness experience.
